After a landmark decision to start licensing offshore bookmakers in Ontario, BetMGM is one of three sportsbooks set to open in Ontario in April. The new sportsbook is a joint venture between Entain and MGM Resorts, and it is expected to simulate other ventures they two have established in previous years.
Both MGM and Entain have an established history, MGM was established in 2018, and Entain’s roots date back several decades. Moreso, they are one of the world’s largest online sportsbook and casino companies and owners of big name brands like Ladbrokes, PartyPoker, and Sportingbet. They are also licensed in over 20 countries and are well-equipped to work in tandem with BetMGM to develop their brand within the Ontario market.
The nice side to this is the two are known for creating friendly to use websites that focus on usability and navigation. Ultimately, these are two of the biggest contributors to overall player satisfaction, and with a white background with black supportive text, most will find the two tasks blend quite well.
While the opening date for BetMGM’s Ontario site is still a few months away, it will likely resemble their U.S sites. If this is the case, you can expect to see several navigational menus throughout the site. This includes a main menu beside the BetMGM logo and others for the sportsbook and casino.
Whether the links within change to appeal to the Ontario market, the odds are the changes will be minimal at best. Another unknown is whether licensing will permit BetMGM to offer its casino and poker platform to Ontarians. Either or, BetMGM offers plenty to keep sports bettors happy, from parlay bets to live streaming, in-play betting, early cashout features and the advantage of the BetMGM rewards program.
BetMGM Sign-up Offer
As noted, the BetMGM sportsbook and casino in Ontario has yet to open, and therefore, BetMGM has yet to publish whether Ontarians will be able to avail a Sign-Up offer. However, that being said, it is safe to suggest if they do introduce a sign-up offer, it will be similar to other sign-up offers such as risk-free bets for the sportsbook and 100% deposit match bonuses for the casino poker room.
Moreover, upon closer inspection of their standard sign-up offer terms and conditions, we would expect to see similar wagering terms for the sportsbook, casino, and poker offers. Moreover, the game contributions and game eligibility to be in place, as will their standard promotional terms and conditions.
While off-topic to the possible sign-up offers, it is notable that BetMGM has a respectable variety of existing player promotions for each platform. Therefore, other promotional opportunities will be available even if a sign-up is absent when the Ontario site opens.
BetMGM Sports Markets
BetMGM is a recognizable name in sportsbook entertainment, so it is not surprising to see them amongst the first to enter the Ontario market. While they have yet to supply any promotional material for which markets they will cover, they will include the big four and a combination of other sports popular with North American punters.
One thing we can attest to though it BetMGM does a solid job when it comes to offering coverage and competitive odds for the big four (NHL, MBA, NBA, MLS). The foreseeable problem for BetMGM is their lack of other sports coverage and the less appealing odds for European and Asian markets. This could be a substantial problem as Ontario is home to a large population of Europeans and Asians, and moreso, appealing to Ontario’s Indian population will be crucial if they hope to jump to the top of the pecking order, so to speak.
Now, in terms of margins, BetMGM is on point with most international soccer leagues like the Champions League averaging 4% to 7%, and likewise, the margins for other top European leagues ranged from 6% to 7%. However, the competitiveness drops when it comes to cricket and rugby, but all things aside, the majority of BetMGM’s customers focus on the big four, so do not expect much movement in their regards.
Ultimately, the markets BetMGM is focused on dictate their odds and margins, as it does the sports they cover. Yes, big name brands will eventually enter the Ontario market, and yes, many will offer superior platforms. However, BetMGM has its advantages, especially when it comes to promotions and the added perks of their rewards program and discounted hotel rooms in Vegas.
As for the other sports markets, we expect BetMGM will include the same options it does with its U.S licensed online sportsbooks, such as:
• Formula 1
• Rugby League
• Rugby Union
BetMGM Interface Across Desktop, Mobile and App
With the exception of the usual limitations for mobile sites and apps, the interface for BETMGM’s Ontario site is not expected to change much from its U.S counterparts. Unfortunately, this may present a challenge as BetMGM has a reputation for being slower than other brands entering the Ontario market. However, that has little to do with the interface, as it is nicely laid out and incorporates a combination of menus to make navigation a focal point.
Essentially, there are two significant menus to take note of, one for navigation to sports, casino and poker, and the others are platform-specific. However, before we go too far, it is worth noting that the desktop, mobile site and BETMGM app will adopt the same layouts, which is ideal considering the significant number of people who prefer mobile betting.
The sportsbook has two menus that apply to overall useability, one is a top menu that lists the various sports as well as My Bets, favourites, and promotions. The other is a side menu that essentially emulates the top menu as it lists all sporting markets covered by BetMGM. Once navigating to a particular sport, everything is laid out in the middle column of the page and includes odds, event times, available betting options. BetMGM has also opted to include other points of interest, such as a parley generator and a media centre to alert users if live streaming for a specific event is available.
In relation to their casino and poker platforms, the casino is powered by the usual population of software suppliers such as Red Tiger Gaming, IGT, NetEnt, WMS, Everi Games, Lightning Box, Konami, High 5 and others. It comes equipped with table games, slots, jackpots and, of course, live dealer games. The layout is reminiscent of most casinos, with the use of menus for navigation and other links for banking and promotions.
If BetMGM follows its setup for its U.S sites, the live casino will be powered by Evolution Gaming and offer the usual mix of baccarat, roulette, and blackjack games. As for the poker interface, it will likely require downloading, as it does in the U.S and will offer a combination of cash games, daily tournaments and sit ’n go tourneys. On the plus side, the table limits will satisfy most budget and player preferences, as will tournament buy-ins. And similar to other poker platforms, the layout is uncomplicated and pretty straightforward.
BetMGM Live Betting and Streaming
While we can’t say with certainty, the probability of BetMGM incorporating live streaming into its Ontario site is high. All its U.S sites feature live streaming of events, but this is dependent on its availability and limitations stemming from broadcasting rights. How that will impact Ontario players is to be seen, but preliminary expectations for most popular sports like the NHL, MBA, and MML soccer will be limited.
As for live betting, two viewing options lends credibility to BetMGM’s navigational efforts. The first is an overview with all available sports displayed in an easy to navigate top menu, and the other is an event view. The event view displays all related details to each live betting event, such as markets, odds, and which media options can be availed.
BetMGM Payment Options
In terms of payment options, BetMGM has not released any information on the payment options will be supported on their Ontario site. While it is a bit early to speculate which options will be available, we anticipate they will include online banking such as Interact, a combination of debit cards and ewallets.
For Canadians hoping for funding options like credit cards or PayPal, both will be off the table. PayPal does not process gambling payments in Canada, nor do Canadian banks or credit card processing companies.
Debit Card – It is safe to say Visa and Mastercard debit cards will be the primary options in this category of payment methods. The only drawback is the added cost of activation, which varies from $3.95 to $6.97, depending on the value of the card.
E-wallet – If BetMGM opts to include e-wallets, the most likely option will be ecoPayz, as Neteller and Skrill no longer process gambling transactions in Canada. Similar to debit cards, there is a processing fee, but they are covered by the sportsbook in most cases. However, if opting to withdraw to an e-wallet, a fee will be deducted, so keep this in mind.
Interact/Bank Transfers – Interact is one of the more preferred methods for online gambling transactions. This lets you transfer funds from a variety of Canadian banks such as TD, Royal, CIBC, Bank of Nova Scotia, and others. Most will charge a minimal fee of $1.50 -$2.00 per transaction, but that is a small price to pay for the convenience of being able to deposit and withdraw directly to your bank.
As for deposit minimums, they are expected to simulate those in the U.S with $10 minimums when funding accounts and $20 minimums for withdrawals. While processing times for withdrawals are expected to be between 1 and 4 days, this cannot be confirmed until BetMGM’s Ontario site is live.
From all accounts, BetMGM is a strong proponent for offering 24/7 support. The problem is, BetMGM tends not to publish support numbers and have opted against offering live support. The problem with this is forgone as it leaves a suggestive tone, but with so many dedicated sites in the U.S and now Canada, support will be stretched thin, and that could impact the quality of support they are capable of delivering.
However, to counter that, BetMGM has an extensive help and contact support centre with a range of helpful topics. These include Account Details, Registration & Verification, Account Access, Deposit, Withdrawal, Promotions, and Bonuses. In addition, the support centre covers other topics such as Sports Betting Rules, Casino, Poker, Geolocation and Responsible Gaming.
BetMGM’s best attributes tend to lie with their market coverage, odds and live streaming capabilities for the NHL, NBA, NFL, and MLS. Beyond this and their propensity for offering an ample supply of promotions and mobile platforms, nothing really stands out.
While admirable to see celebrities like Jamie Foxx and Wayne Gretzky acting as brand ambassadors, the lending of their names cannot overlook the slower than expected interface that BetMGM seems unable to overcome. This will likely be a deterrent for most bettors, especially among those who favour in-play betting.
However, this should not take away from the bottom line if you are looking for an established sportsbook operator. The reality is, BetMGM has been in the business for a long time, but some improvements are needed. Mainly, this relates to improving their odds beyond those of the major North American leagues and eliminating lag. Mind you, they are not the worse option for Ontarian punters, especially if you love sports betting with the option to play casino games or poker.
